Artist Statement

My work is a construction of personal experience, colour and shapes, representations of situations, experimentalism and chance. It is a result of being open and effected by most things around, from the past and up to present day. Thinking even while walking, makes things flow from my memory then into my notebooks to form the first image or starting point!

With my paintings I start with a network of lines traced over the first layer on the canvas, then go with the thought and the feelings from when I started the piece to scratch and manipulate the paint mainly using sticks and fingers My aim is to create an energy of colour and to develop rich multi-layered and textural images.

Painting for me, is like writing something down, to capture ideas and remembering, this thought pattern leads me to my video work, I sometimes want to make a situation instead of just an image. So I use moving images to breath life into my work with sound and vision.

Julie Miles - Artist

Sculptural and functional ceramics using nature both as inspiration and material for her work.

Julie works with both porcelain and brick clay to produce two diverse ranges of work which you can explore through the different galleries here.

Her porcelain work uses traditional slab building techniques to create vessel forms from abstract landscape inspired vessels to battered watering cans and tea light holders. Flowers, petals and fabrics are also used but are dipped in porcelain to create new surfaces that when exposed to light reveal details of prints, drawings and impressions taken from the landscape.

Julie has been using brick as a creative medium for a few years now working with schools to create large-scale sculptures for their outdoor spaces. Her first the Brick Kiln on the Wayside Arts Trail was short listed for the Brick Development Association Brick Awards 2006 in the Best Landscape category.
